Prospective Graduate Students
I am looking for motivated M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in Statistics to join my group in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria.
Students in my group work on Bayesian methodology, functional data analysis, tensor methods, and computational statistics, often motivated by neuroimaging applications. A strong background in mathematics and statistics and experience with programming in R or Python are expected; prior exposure to Bayesian methods or neuroimaging is helpful but not required.
For information about the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Statistics and how to apply, see the department’s admission requirements.
Funding. Graduate students in the department are typically funded through a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and scholarships. More information is available on UVic’s graduate funding page.
Applying for external scholarships is highly encouraged, for example the Canada Graduate Research Scholarships for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Other scholarships include:
- Indigenous students: AISES scholarships and the BC Hydro Indigenous Scholarship
- Ph.D. applicants from China: the China Scholarship Council (CSC) fellowship
- Women in statistics: the ASA Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship

- a short paragraph on which of my research directions interests you and why.
Due to the volume of emails, I may not be able to reply to every message individually, but I read all messages that follow the instructions above.
Undergraduate Research Assistants and Research Interns
Undergraduate students can join my group through the following programs:
- NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA), for UVic students
- Faculty of Science Undergraduate Research Award (SURA), for UVic students
- Honours projects, for UVic students
- Mitacs Globalink Research Internship, for international students
If you are interested in working with me through one of these programs, please email me your CV, transcripts, and a short note on your research interests. For USRA and SURA, submissions are typically due in January, so please contact me early for summer positions.
